The Electrical Safety Council has researched that around half of all accidental fires in UK homes have an electrical origin and 85% of these can be attributed to electrical appliances.1 Product misuse is a major cause of these accidents and the campaign will address the basic and easily avoidable “blunders” that people make when using electrical appliances in the home.
We’re pleased to see that the Electrical Safety Council are campaigning heavily on Electrical Safety which is done via Electrical Safety First. At EEESafe, we are busy building a database of Registered Appliance Repairers to be known as EEESafe DATs (Domestic Appliance Technicians). Not only will our Registered Repairers be a safer option when it comes to Appliance Repairs, but we are also building a National Appliance Safety Register where you’ll soon be able to see the benefits of Registering your Appliances with EEESafe.
Our Registered repairers all need to pass an online assessment of Ohms Law and also produce evidence of their work in the trade and with consumers. We ask them to re-register annually, to make sure they are still in practice.
They will also be required to offer their work to be rated by the public, so that we can have some clear indication of how they are performing. Any Appliance Repair person should be proud to offer up their workmanship for review. We believe consumers should be informed when making a choice to have someone accredited enter their home, and repair something connected to the Electrical Circuit in the home.
