If we’re to take note of WRAP’s Benefits of Reuse report, then it’s a staggering fact of reality, that we should be building Repair & Reuse into our communities.

Strangely enough at EEESafe, we’ve been saying this for years, but with a simple caveat.  Consumers deserve to know a person is Competent when it comes to Electrical Repair work.  They deserve to know also, who has repaired the used items they purchase and what has been done to them.  We expect it with our cars, and we believe consumers would like access to such information when purchasing used Appliances

Whenever an Electrical repair of any appliance of any size is made, it’s important the item is electrically safe.  Understanding Electricity requires training and education and therefore consumers should have a method of determining a person’s depth of knowledge, to render an Electrical Appliance is safe to use.   A PAT Test only means an item is safe to switch on, but equally important is knowing that the product conforms to the safety standard and tests that the appliance had, when it was first placed on to the market of the country it has been sold.  This is a legal requirement.

Showing someone how to do a repair, either online or at a Repair Cafe, doesn’t make them qualified to effect further repairs on a multitude of Electrical Items, that may well create a fire risk for someone else.  There are inherent safety risks operating in this way, which is why a consumer deserves to recognise a trusted brand, committed to local sustainability and safety in Electrical Reuse, Repair or Refurbishment. Electrical repair is an exciting sector, particularly as we see predicted growth, based on Government Strategies and Policies on Reuse and Repair. Such as the Welsh Government’s Beyond Recycling and their target to have 30% of people working from home. 

Diagnosing what is wrong requires training and is completely separate to putting a recycled item together again.  We believe that repairable items should stay in the community, and not be taken away via Household Recycling Centres, only to be sold back to us at a higher cost than if it were repaired in the community.
